Spain has so much more to offer than sandy beaches and tasty tapas. This came as a surprise to me when I first moved there in 2013. Before moving, I was torn between Barcelona and Santander, a place I had never heard about before. But the nature in the North of Spain made the decision easy. I spent a total of two years living in this region but have made numerous visits back since. This image shows the local forest. A place I’d frequently visit on foggy days.

Between guiding two photo tours in the North of Spain, I had a few days to wander off on my own. My first stop was this forest near the Cantabrian and Asturian border that I had visited on a few occasions before. Well, I hadn’t actually planned to stop here, but on the way to my accommodation, I noticed some low clouds that could indicate foggy conditions. I quickly made my way to the forest and had the pleasure of spending the next hours roaming around in what can only be described as the perfect conditions for forest photography.

This haunted-looking forest in the Basque region of Northern Spain has become an increasingly popular destination for photographers. It’s not hard to understand why when you’re walking amongst these otherworldly trees. I’ve visited this particular location numerous times over the years, but on this day, I was lucky to have a wet and foggy morning all by myself.
